Who are the Grateful Dead?

The original merry pranksters, the beatniks of their time, a group of individuals with different musical backgrounds coming together to explore freedom, peace, and love. For 55+ years, the Dead’s impact on the 60’s counterculture, the subcultures of Deadhead for each decade, and their influence on the technology of instruments and performances have stood the test of time, still sending out soundwaves through the ages. The founding members were Jerry Garcia (Died 1995), Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (Died 1973), Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann.

Many members of the band have come and gone for various reasons; today, we're fortunate to have the remaining members of the Grateful Dead (Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann) accompanied by John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chimenti performing together as Dead & Company.

What a Long,
Strange Trip It's Been

When I first started thinking about what to do for my senior capstone, this idea at the time was just words on a page to be turned in. I didn't really consider that this would turn out to be it; now that it is, I can't picture anything else being the highlighted subject of my time at CCAD.
